Eco-village in an informal settlement!!

We visited a really exciting project in one of the informal settlements in Khayelitsha Township. The community here is transforming their 3000 shacks into eco-houses and building a community center, school, clinic, community kitchen, hostel and so much more.



They are making "eco-beam" buildings, where they infill a wood frame with bags filled with sand: a resource aplenty here since Khayelitsha was built on a giant sand dune. The building pictured here is the hostel, being used as a model to teach people about eco-beam.
